Young Maltese Women - Of Instagram and beauty on a small island.

When I arrived on Malta I chanced upon a young woman named Martina through Instagram – she was one of the first people I photographed. She exuded maturity and poise beyond her years which she later described as, ‘comfortable in my uncomfortableness’.  Her energy left a deep impression.

As I delved deeper into the Instagram web, I was struck by the manner in which several other young women on the island were choosing to present themselves. Unlike many of a similar age, they appeared to have chosen to steer clear of the objectifying aesthetics that define the ‘validation seeking’ Instagram stereotype. These young women had decided to present their personality and beauty in a different way.

I was curious to understand where they drew their strength and confidence from, and so I decided to dig deeper and meet with each of them for a portraiture sitting. I chose to portray these young women without makeup - save for a touch of mascara - and to shoot their image from a position as far removed as possible from the disposable Instagram visual we have all seen countless of times before.

Inspired by the old masters of portraiture, I attempted to hone an honest image of each subject with the intention of capturing an essence of authenticity as opposed to something fabricated or fake.

Whilst the reasons behind why the subjects chose to present themselves in the way they did are complex, a unifying theme clearly emerged from all – a determined sense of self-respect.
